Whitstable Junior School

Learning today for life tomorrow

Physical Education

Our aim at Whitstable Junior School is to foster a lifelong passion for physical activity in all of the children, while developing the respect, competence, confidence and skill required to take part in a variety of sporting activities.

We believe that Physical Education, being active & leading a healthy lifestyle are vital parts of school life and ultimately impact on our children’s future well-being and achievement.  It is therefore our intent to provide an inclusive, broad and balanced PE curriculum that ensures ALL children will benefit, whether through enhancing existing skills, learning new skills or being introduced to new sports, clubs, teams and organisations. Through PE and sport, our children learn to develop the important qualities of resilience, community, teamwork, independence and challenge, leading to improved concentration, attitude and academic achievement.

A wide range of PE is delivered to the pupils throughout the school following the Getset4PE Scheme of work, which aims to engage and inspire all pupils. Sports taught are broad and varied, both during the school day, and as extra-curricular clubs. Opportunities include dance, rounders, dodgeball, pickleball, basketball, cricket, netball and football.

We  provide team competitions, both intra- and interschool. We enter many varied competitions, such as football, dodgeball, speed stacking, handball, basketball, tag rugby, cricket and dance competitions through working with HBHS School Games Organiser.

We ensure that our disadvantaged children have early access to after-school clubs and support the payment of clubs through Sports Premium money. When selecting children for competitions, we consider those children who may not otherwise have these opportunities or that could then be encouraged to take up that sport, over the importance of winning.

Our Sports and Healthy living week in Term 6 is always a huge talking point amongst the WJS family, where our Sports Crew and House Captains support the rest of the school to enjoy yoga, wake up and shake up, a variety of different sports, intraschool competitions and practice on achieving their personal best in our Sports Day activities (run by our Sports Crew and House Captains). In 2023, we were joined by a Para-Olympic tennis player and this year we will be celebrating the Olympics!

Please read our Sports Newsletter (below) to read more about the amazing activities we provide.
