Whitstable Junior School

Learning today for life tomorrow

History

Our aim at Whitstable Junior School is to instil a lifelong passion for History in all of our children, giving them the opportunity to explore and engage with History as they enjoy learning today for life tomorrow.

At Whitstable Junior School we aim to deliver a history curriculum that is accessible to all and that aims to cultivate inquisitive, critical, and knowledgeable learners who develop a deep understanding of chronology, change over time, and historical events. The intent of our History curriculum is to inspire a lifelong love for the subject, to understand, enjoy and appreciate the diverse and multi-cultural world that we live in today and how the past has affected the present day.

The curriculum is carefully structured to be coherent, sequenced, and knowledge-rich, ensuring that pupils can make links between current and previous learning. Through thoughtful planning and evidence-based lessons, children progressively acquire a secure understanding of historical concepts and skills. Throughout their time at Whitstable Junior School, the main concepts of: Everyday life, Democracy, Significant People, Beliefs and Conflicts and Invasion are interwoven so that pupils are continuously exposed to a wide range of historical periods, events, and figures, whilst also allowing them to make connections, draw comparisons, and develop analytical skills essential for historical enquiry, as they progress through the school.
